Nagwagi si Mikaela Ashika Vargas, ang 13 taong gulang na estudyante mula sa Virac, Catanduanes National High School sa isinagawang 54th Universal Postal Union (UPU) International Letter Writing Competition for Young People ng Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost).
Tampok sa patimpalak ang temang “Imagine you are the ocean. Write a letter to someone explaining why and how they should take good care of you”.
Ang winning entry ni Ms. Vargas ang opisyal na ipapadala ng PHLPost sa Berne, Switzerland upang labanan ang iba pang lahok mula sa 192 na bansa sa buong mundo na kasapi ng Universal Postal Union (UPU).
Maliban kay Mikaela Ashika Vargas, kabilang din sa mga nagwagi ay sina Aime Renny B. Suon, mula sa Agusan National High School, Butuan City– second prize; at si Jayden Lyle Darcy V. Tonosgan naman mula sa Antique Vocational School, Bugasong, Antique – third prize.
Ang first prize winner ay pagkakalooban ng Php25,000 cash, ang second prize ay makakatanggap ng Php 20,000, at ang third prize ay magkakamit ng P15,000 plus corresponding medals and certificates para sa lahat ng nagwagi.
Sentro sa tema ng patimpalak ay hikayatin ang mga kabataan na maging malikhain at mapalalim ang kanilang kaalaman sa kahalagahan ng ocean conservation.
Layunin ng UPU contest na maging mulat ang mga kabataan sa mahahalagang papel ng koreo sa lipunan.
Pinapaunlad ng Letter Writing ang iba’t ibang aspeto ng pag-aaral ng mga estudyante tulad ng kasanayan sa wika at komunikasyon gayun din and social-emotional learning nito.
Ang mga Board of Judges ay binubuo nina Ms. Melanie Viloria-Briones, ED, Vice President for Academic Affairs, at concurrent Vice President for International Engagements at, Vice Presidents for Quality Assurance – City College of San Fernando Pampanga and Founder, School Press Advisers Movement Inc.; Ms. Rachelle Bellesteros-Lintao, Ph.D., President of the Linguistic Society of the Philippines and Professor at the Faculty of Arts and Letters of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) at Mr. Archie Bergosa, Editor-in-Chief, Explained PH, University of the Philippines-Los Banos.
